Skills and Experience
I am an experienced team leader whose responsibilities have included the setup, development and ongoing management of an award winning multidisciplinary NHS specialist community neurological rehabilitation service which provides assessment, treatment and advice for people living with complex neurological conditions over a large area of Sussex.
Whilst working as a Consultant Occupational Therapist in Canada I was jointly responsible for the initiation and development of the occupational therapy role with the Canadian Back Institute (CBI). During this time I was responsible for assessing and recommending rehabilitation programmes for clients with predominantly musculoskeletal injuries who were unable to return to work or engage in activities of daily living as a result of involvement in road traffic accidents. Working closely with employers I compiled return to work and functional treatment programmes aimed at maximising client independence.
A significant part of my current and previous work has involved managing clients with complex needs through a multidisciplinary approach and goal orientated framework. My work has focused on empowering the client to manage their situation by maximising abilities, preventing further deterioration of their condition, and reducing dependence on support services where appropriate.
I provide workshops and seminars to groups of clients and health and social care colleagues on various clinical and service development issues. I have contributed to university occupational therapy training programmes both in the UK and Canada. I regularly undertake supervision and mentoring of experienced rehabilitation staff in both the public and private sectors. From 2012 to 2015 I was a member of the NHS England Strategic Clinical Advisory Group for Stroke and Rehabilitation. I am currently a trustee for Headway West Sussex. I have a particular interest in fatigue management and assisting clients to remain in employment.
